Our events

Eklipse has organised, contributed and participated in various conferences and other events. Eklipse supports and encourages capacity building events, but also societal debate and citizen engagement on policy and research, relevant to biodiversity and ecosystem services in Europe.

2022

Workshops

13th June 2022 – Workshop on science-policy interface regarding seaweed, their ecosystem services & impacts

Location: Brussels

Organisers: EC – DG MARE, Eklipse & Estelle Balian (FEAL)

Target audiences:  Representatives from selected European Commission services and macroalgae experts across Europe from academia, policy, industry and civil society organisations

 Goals: 1) Facilitate cross-sectoral dialogue and share experiences from macroalgae experts, 2) to further support the development of the EU Algae initiative and contribute to the sustainable development of the sector, through bringing forward necessary research priorities.

28th April 2022 – Online Focus group “Biodiversity and pandemics”

Location: online

Organisers: Eklipse & Estelle Balian (FEAL)

Target audiences:  Representatives from selected European Commission services and experts involved in initiatives linked to the topic of biodiversity and pandemics

 Goals: 1) Target which request will be processed by an independent and interdisciplinary Eklipse Expert Working Group (EWG), 2) Discuss and select the request(s) whose results and outputs would be useful for their work and /
or feed in a key policy process, 3) Create a cross-sectoral consortium of requesters that will follow up the Eklipse process.

31st May 2021 – Online Workshop: “Biodiversity in post-covid cross-sectoral challenges”

Location: online

Organisers: Eklipse & EC- Knowledge Centre for Biodiversity (KCBD)

Target audiences:  Representatives from selected European Commission services and high-level scientists

 Goals: 1) clarify the interlinkages between different sectors, biodiversity and health, 2) explore how cross-sectoral approaches/actions can help prevent pandemics (root causes) and be better prepared when they occur, 3) identify knowledge needs to support these cross-sectoral approaches/actions

2020

Capacity Building

January 2020 – Workshops “Science-Policy Interface (SPI) training ”

Location: Budapest (14th January); Porto (20th January),

Organisers: Eklipse

Target audiences:  young professionals in the first 5 years of their career

Goal: build the capacity of participants to better understand policy processes and how emerging issues can be better integrated into policy agendas (both research and policy development) in a pro-active manner. The workshops concentrate on the different phases of policy cycles, enabling participants to comprehend how to be active from agenda-setting and policy formulation to decision-making and implementation.

2019-2020 Workshop series : “NGO capacity building regarding the role of grids in a renewables-based electricity sector”

Target audience: Environmental NGO representatives, both professional and volunteers; experts from various fields (policymakers, scientists, industry representatives). The event is targeted at a European audience.

Capacity Building

23rd July 2019 – Webinar: “Exploring financing options for greener cities”

Location: online

Co-organiser: ICLEI – Local governments for sustainability and the NATURVATION project

Target audience: local stakeholders having an interest in better understanding (1) the financing landscape, (2) financing options, (3) possible ‘investment’ cases and (4) financial arrangements (such as blended financing).

21-25th of October 2019 – Session : Business-oriented session, in the context of the ESP 10 World Conference

Location: Hannover, Germany

Organiser: Ecosystem Services Partnership (ESP)

Target audience: Scientists, practitioners and policy makers

Goal: Strengthen science, policy, and business collaboration and uptake of ecosystem service concepts, the Ecosystem Services Partnership (ESP) has organised a business-oriented workshop during its ESP 10 World conference. This symposium welcomed up to six business representatives to share their ecosystem services experiences from the perspective of their corporate practices, with the objective of stimulating the academic community to better understand what ecosystem services means to the stakeholder in the private sector and how they can be part of the ongoing drive to incorporate the concept into corporate action.

Conferences

7th to 9th May 2019 – Conference: “World Congress for Wetland and lake restoration – Living lakes: Business and NGO partnership for climate change mitigation and adaptation”

Location: Valencia, Spain

Organiser: Fundación Global Nature Spain and Global Nature Fund International

Target audience: Stakeholders related to lake and wetland management, including: companies of economic sectors benefiting directly from lakes ecosystem services (e.g. tourism, food), farmers and fishermen, administrations and political decision makers at local and regional level, scientific institutions, NGOs and other representatives of the local communities.

Goal: Focusing on climate change mitigation and adaptation in lake and wetland regions, conference delegates from governments, corporates and NGOs discussed and evaluated what – from municipal to federal level – can be done to contribute to an increase in the resilience of lakes and wetlands as ecosystems, as well as the resilience of local communities living around lakes, against negative impacts of climate change. The role of business and their responsibility in contributing to strategies for the protection of water ecosystems and their crucial services was also addressed.

23 and 24 January 2019 – The EKLIPSE Proof of Concept Conference

Location: Brussels, Belgium

Organiser: Eklipse

Target audience: The conference was an opportunity for networking with fellow policy makers, scientists, citizens and other stakeholders with an interest in strengthening the links and interface between science, policy and society on biodiversity and ecosystem services. Moreover, participants were given a chance to engage fully in the implementation of the future Eklipse mechanism, to ensure that science, policy and society are better linked.

8th to 9th October 2019 – Workshop: “Exploring financing options for greener cities – Strengthening the capacity of local stakeholders to explore appropriate financing arrangements for nature-based interventions”

Location: Athens, Greece

Organiser: ICLEI – Local governments for sustainability and the NATURVATION project

Target audiences:NBS stakeholders

Goal: Increase capacity to respond to the community development needs of financing arrangements for local biodiversity, ecosystem services and nature-based solutions interventions in response to local urban challenges.

1st and 2nd October 2019: Workshop – “Plastics in our Ocean: A micro or macro problem?”

Location: Donóstia – San Sebastián, Spain

Organiser: NanoGUNE

Target audience: Stakeholders affected or affecting the problem of plastics and microplastics in the ocean

Goal: Promote co-learning and co-creation between all participants, in a highly participatory way, on the problem of plastics and microplastics in the ocean and their effects on biodiversity and ecosystem services. It focused on how science and technology, industry, policy, and the societal factor can contribute to solve it in a European perspective.

Organiser: Project cp³ “Civil-public-private-partnerships – collaborative governance approaches for policy innovation to enhance biodiversity and ecosystem services delivery in agricultural landscapes” funded under a BiodivERsA/FACCE-JPI 2013-2014 joint call.

Target audience: Researchers, both from social and natural sciences, policy-makers at regional and EU level, as well as practitioners interested in the institutional analysis of ecosystem services governance.

24th to 27th September 2018: Workshop – “Planning for an uncertain future: Climate Change, Wetlands and Natura 2000”

Location: Budapest, Hungary

Target audience: Policy makers, national and EU authorities, scientists and policy NGOs.

17th to 20th June 2018 – Workshop: “Building the Capacity of EU early career researchers to operate effectively at the Science-Policy-Society interface”

Location: Lošinj, Croatia
Organiser: IMBER– Integrated Marine Biosphere Research Project Early Career Network and MarCons COST Action

Target audience: The workshop is open to EU-based early career researchers (less than 7 years post-PhD) and final stage PhD students from any scientific discipline, providing that their research is in some way related to the management of coastal and marine resources.
